Editorial Review for Los Gatos Brewing Company – by Laura Reiley
In Short
The dining room is a huge, cavernous space with high, rustic-beamed ceilings, all the better to amplify the roar of the crowds on most nights. The menu goes far beyond bar snacks, with spicy fried rock shrimp, steamed mussels and spit-roasted chicken. A dramatic wood-fired oven churns out great designer pizzas. Beers include a pilsner, hefeweizen, pale ale and special seasonal brews.

Finding a good Sunday Brunch in the South Bay is a challenge these days. I decided to try the Los Gatos Brewing Company a place I had sometimes visited for a beer and bar snack. With my wife and daughter we arrived at 10:00 a.m., there were about 5 tables seated and no line. The waitress appeared after 5 mins and we ordered some Mimosas which arrived in about 5 minutes. We ordered. After a further 55 minutes the restaurant was now filling up we noticed that many people (who arrived way after us) were tucking in to their food. The waitress explained that the computer had screwed up and our order didn't make it to the kitchen. A table next to us had now summoned the manager and were told to be patient! How about some corrective action? No just wait and it will be right out. Our food took a further 10 minutes. The waitress continued to try to be humorous which irritated us. Apologies, a visit to the table by the manager perhaps a free Mimosa - no chance. They just don't care. Won't go back and advise you to avoid it. Los Gatos has some great restaurants. This isn't one of them.

When I think of pub fare, I think fish and chips, burgers, maybe calamari, that kind of thing. Not so, here - I had exquisite portobello ravioli, and my (first!) date had puttanesca, (if I remember correctly), which was hearty and delicious. Menu is decidedly Italian, good variety, and the food is excellent - this place was recommended to me by two different foodie friends, and they didn't steer me wrong - I'll definitely go again! Unfortunately, I did not sample any of the beer. The atmosphere is gorgeous, historic, slightly cramped, and rather noisy, but expected for a brewery - lively, upbeat. Don't skip the cheesecake (ours was pumpkin) - it's definitely large enough for two, and well worth the caloric splurge. Great date locale - amidst the charm of Los Gatos - makes for lovely walking after dinner under the lighted trees.
Pros: Superb food, historic building, love Los Gatos
Cons: Busy, slightly noisy (but lively), a little more expensive than I was expecting
