Thank goodness they're back. This has
been an institution for me for eons. I was so glad on first visit that the same Lou's was back...great food, service, ambience and personal attention by ownership. I'll be back as a regular.

Best Patty Melt in the World!.
I love patty melts and have had them at 100s of places all over the US. Lou's is far and away the best I have had anywhere. So good infact it is almost impossible for me to order anything else. Luckily I always go with family so can sample the excellent breakfasts too. The coffee is strong diner style coffee so if you are a StarBucks kinda person you will be disappointed but if you like you coffee strong and black with you oversize breakfast this is a good place to get it. Lunchs are normal size but breakfasts are huge if you are lite eater bring a friend and share because you will not be able to finish the generous portions on your own.

mm mmm!.
My first time here was a good experience. I had the "pigs in blanket" and tried some gravy and biscuits; both dishes had big portions and was delicious. It's not as "charming" as some other places, but serves great food and has good service.

decent food, but nasty yucky coffee.
a decent greasy spoon type of diner for breakfast. Decent pancakes. But oh my goodness the coffee is nasty and blucky. Too hot, burned taste and very robusta-ey. I think that with some great local roasted coffee made fresh and a small uptick in the quality of some of their items these guys could rock again. Love to support the local indies but it better be better. This is a good palce for family breakfast but needs some high quality.

One of the few spots in trendy Los Gatos to get a real old-school breakfast..
The Food
Think big. In fact, think huge. The waitresses at Lou's have bulging biceps from hefting the huge dishes to the tables. The menu reads like a greatest hits of '50s diner fare: tall stacks of pancakes slathered with scoops of butter, thick waffles with plenty of syrup, long strips of bacon, omlettes that scream with wild abandon, etc. The $2.99 breakfast special is a classic, with two eggs, two strips of bacon or sausage, hash browns, two pieces of toast and orange juice. Oh, it's just a joy to have a place like this in the Jamba Juice-and-Starbucks town of Los Gatos. Calorie counters beware: This is the type of place where a half-pound burger is listed as a "light" alternative. Seriously
The Scene
The family-run diner has been tightening waist bands in Los Gatos for 40 years. It's hard to even comprehend how much the town has changed in that time. But, it's not hard to believe that Lou's hasn't changed one iota.
