A repository of California culture, in the form of art and artifact..
The Museum
De Saisset was a bequest by Isabel de Saisset, the last member of a San Jose French family, who died in 1950. Built in 1955, the museum sits on the campus of Santa
Clara University next to the Mission Santa Clara de Asis.
The museum's permanent collection is a quirky mix of historic photographs, prints and artifacts from the mission's past as well as the university's, together with an eclectic mix of paintings and sculpture.
On Display
From the permanent collection are prints and artifacts of a 19th-century tannery, early photos of the college, and a modern reconstruction of an Ohlone straw teepee.
New Artwork
De Saisset hosts numerous visiting exhibits. A recent one featured California artist David Gilhooly's "assemblages," built from puzzle pieces or plastic human and animal figures. De Saisset also shows exhibits borrowed from other museums.
