Editorial Review for Hakone Japanese Gardens – by Carole Terwilliger Meyers and Citysearch Editors
Overview
Now a city park, this 15-acre garden was originally constructed by a private citizen to typify a mid-17th-century Zen garden. Now it's composed of four separate gardens: the Hill and Pond Garden, the Tea Garden, the Zen Garden, and Kizuna En, a bamboo garden.
The Appeal
Among the gardens' special features are a Japanese-style house built without nails or adhesives, a pond stocked with colorful koi and an authentic tea ceremony room. Hakone also boasts the largest collection of Japanese bamboo in the Western world. Special events include the annual Matsuri spring festival that showcases Asian culture and Japanese cuisine, and the fall tea ceremony. Classes range from traditional Japanese art forms to yoga, tai chi and meditation set amidst the picturesque setting. The gardens are also available for weddings and special events.
