The Scene
With one of the most attractive interiors in San Jose, Paolo's has vine-like wrought iron posts and railings meandering through its oversized dining room. The room's earth tones are accented by autumnal plaids and brocade upholstery while vibrant oil paintings lend splashes of color. Moody lighting provides a cozy, romantic atmosphere.
The Food
Start with the gamberi alla livornese, a menu staple that plates up buttery fat prawns sparked with garlic, white wine and lemon. Though dishes like saltimbocca and capellini Regina (think cream and butter) remain on the menu for longtime customers, the concentration is on more sophisticated fare. Green olives and Medjool dates dot Muscovy duck breast. Penne pasta is crowned with grilled tuna, sweet slow-roasted tomato, Moroccan black olives and caramelized red onion. Go the traditional route for desert and try the creamy cheesecake or cannoli.

We went there for a girls night out for a play. They had served a buffet which was not too bad. There was a variety of dishes, the meat was very good. However the desserts were a little skimpy, just some crackers and chocolates. I guess for the price it was a fair meal but it could have some improvements. The service was excellent, the staff was very courteous. I would recommend them for play nights as they are very conveniently located, but do not expect a very elaborate meal.

Paolos serve express lunch which is quite good. The soups are excellent. Clam chowder and the tomato bisque were remarkable. Dinner was not so impressive. Very expensive.

I read the reviews and I chose this restaurant to celebrate out anniversary because of it's romantic reviews. We are in our late 20's and felt so out of place here. There were only business people in suits & over priced dishes. The waiter was friendly and the lighting was dim, but we didn't feel comfortable. The pastas had butter, not sauce (which is my favorite part) and we didn't understand most of the dishes on the menu so we was disappointed. I'm sure you would like this restaurant if this is the type of scene you like, but it's not out thing. Not our definition of romantic.
