Horrible Wait Staff. For the first 20 minutes, which only got us our drinks and some bread, the waiter was great. Then a larger table came in and ordered the prix fixe menu and from then on out dinner was a struggle. We made the mistake of asking for a dessert menu and that took us another 10 min. We finally decided to go and found paying the bill a complete disappointment. Rather than feeling we had spent 100 bucks on a great date night out, I felt cheated of a even a mediocre experience. DO NOT GO ON A BUSY NIGHT! I think that's the lesson to be learned here. Oh, and if you are wondering why I didn't mention the food at all it's because it's simply unnoticeable, neither great nor awful...just sort of there.
What's the fuss?. Food was either over-spiced or under-spiced and strange "garnishes" were stale and/or greasy. Service was very slow. Portions were small. Strange layout and cheap wood meets warehouse style interior. Don't go.
Excellent Resturant. The service is always good, the ambiance is romantic. The food is almost always perfect, although we've had a few bad meals over all the times we've been there. I would highly recommend the tasting menus they offer. Most have been excellent. They seem to do best with sauces and asparagas.
Acceptable, but Overrated.
My biggest problem with this restaurant is that it didnt live up to my expectations. Friends and this and other websites have given fantastic reviews about this place.
I tried the chef's tasting menu: poached pear with beets, rabbit ravioli, roast duck breast, and coffee mousse. The pear dish was too earthy for my taste- a strange combination that simply tried too hard. The ravioli was good, and the duck entree was tender, yet it was almost tasteless! Even the Caesar was only average- not particularly fresh or tasty. Most disturbing, however, was the steamed clam appetizer my dad ordered- many of the clams were rotten! This was brought up to the waiter, but in the end we were disappointed that nothing was done about it- nary an apology.
In the end, I guess I was expecting too much. I was prepared to be dazzled- the result was underwhelming.
This little bistro brings drama and Euro-cool to North San Pedro Street..
>The Scene
The weathered bricks and exposed beams give the small dining room a comfortable, lived-in feeling. The tiny kitchen, a fish bowl morphed with a gazebo, sits squarely in the middle of the dining room. 71 Saint Peter is strictly date material.
The Food
71 Saint Peter's prices are very reasonable, portions are big, and the clean, bright tastes of its contemporary Italian cuisine have many advocates. It bills itself as a Mediterranean grill, which shows a surprising lack of self-awareness. Grilled portobello mushrooms, seafood linguine, tomato bruschetta--this is clearly Italian food affected by the tastes and enthusiasms of Northern California. Grilled asparagus, anchovy-rich Caesar salad, and steamed clams top the appetizer list, and the short pasta list features nary a clunker.
Wonderful Ambience, Spotty Svc/Food.
The setting of this place is quaint and beautiful - definite romance potential.
The food was probably very fresh (the chef remarks on their website that he tries "not to alter food too much") but we found our entrees a little lacking in interesting flavors. Perhaps we're used to oversauced entrees :-) The appetizer, a unique bruschetta was phenomenal though. Try it if you go!
Service was spotty. A waitress took the time to chat with us but our main waiter was less than gracious in explanations, and it got worse as the night went on. Perhaps he was having a bad day.
Put on a happy face!. You'll be smiling as you sit in the romantic atmosphere of this charming place as delicious food is placed in front of you. This place definitely has a warmth and charm all it's own. The service is friendly and prompt...The food tastes like somebody made it with great care and love. As Wolfgang Puck would say "Live! Love! And eat!"
Excellent. This restaurant has to be the BEST place I have ever eaten at! The food is excellent and the service is warm and attentive. If you have a date, it is very romantic. My wife and I had a very romantic meal for our 20th anniversery. If you just want to have the best meal of your life, you have to go to this restaurant!
