What People Are Saying About Iguanas Taqueria

The SceneLocated near San Jose State University, just below a tattoo parlor, Iguanas is incredibly popular with downtown dwellers looking for lunch, dinner or a late-night gorge. The FoodOne word: burritos. The authentic Mexican wraps served at this downtown taqueria are monstrous. Luckily, they are every bit as good as they are huge. The carne asada is the best. Iguanas also offers excellent Mexican-style tacos with all the fixins'. The torta sandwich, a toasted French roll stuffed with meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream and guacamole, is a worthwhile venture away from tortilla fare.

We saw this place on Man VS Food and decided to try it. It is located in an old house in the heat of the San Jose State University.
It was definitely a case of television editing making a place appear polar opposite of what it actually is. I can see why the campus crowd loves Iguana's. It is inexpensive, stays open late, location allows for a close walking proximity. It is hipto-grunge and sports a 'party' attitude/ It is exactly what one would expect in an establishment tucked away in a university setting.
I can get passed the paint chipped walls; the need to use tokens to use the incredibly disgusting bathroom and the lack of space to sit when the place is marginally busy. What I cannot get passed is the food itself.
We ordered the famous BurritoZilla- an 18 inch, 5.5 pound burrito that tasted like anything, but an actual burrito. It was skillfully constructed, but the flavor was just not there.
Exercising our 3x you're out rule, on another visit, we opted for smaller portions and tried the carne asada and pollo. Again, the flavor was just not there.
I would not say it was horrible. I would say that it was edible, but not enjoyable.
- Pros: Inexpensive, close to campus, interesting clientele
- Cons: Not the best food, outdated, grungy, dirty
Great Burritos!

I seriously don't know what that girl below is talking about. I've been going here for years and not once have I had any problems with their customer service. In fact, I would say that the person behind the register has always been friendly, outgoing, and cheerful. I love this place because of their hot orange sauce. I like it better than La Victoria because it's spicier and tastier. It is the bomb yo.

My favorite place downtown. The Nachos, Burritos, and Tacos are all excellent. Never leave hungry and great tasting. Don't need to cover up your bad tasting food with any color sauce. Also the employees are always extremely fast and friendly. I don't know what the girl's problem is other than she probably works at the other place around the corner and is jealous her food isn't as good.

Movies, Movies, Movies:
Iguanas is a great place to visit before catching a flick at nearby Camera One or Camera 3.
After Midnight:
This is a prime spot for late-night eats. Iguanas is open until 3am on some nights and makes for a nice alternative to Jack in the Box.
