One of San Jose' first outposts of California cuisine remains one of its best..
The Scene
Brick walls, deep-burgundy booths, rich red velvet, white-linen tablecloths and Renaissance-style artwork give Eulipia a modern, Mediterranean feel.
The Food
The kitchen puts heavy emphasis on presentation. Some of the dishes are simply breathtaking to behold. Luckily, the taste backs up the view at this beacon of New American fare. The appetizer menu hails mainly from the sea: oysters on the half shell, mussels roasted in garlic and saffron jus, fried calamari with Anaheim chili and lemon. Of the pastas, try the white cheddar cheese macaroni with prosciutto, or the prawn and mussel capellini. On a second (or third) visit, don't miss the fantastic double-cut pork chop served with sweet onion jam and currant jus. The kitchen also does a nice job with ahi tuna, seared rare and accompanied by shiitake mushrooms and a soy ginger glaze.
Fabulous place!. Eulipia consistently has great food and thoughtful service. Try the creme brulee - wonderful!
good greif. Our party of 8 had reservations for 5:30, got there at 5:40 got seated at 5:55. Restaurant was empty at the time of our arrival. This should have given us a clue but we had an 8 pm show, so we stayed. Appetisers were delicious. We had a chance to sample and share several and all were good: muscles, fried calamary, oysters and shrimp satey. We had high expectations for main course. Duck breast was half burnt and whatever was not burned tasted awful. Lamb was not made to ordered doneness. Ahi tuna was bland and not interesting. If you still decide to go to Eulipia, I recommend to stick with salmon, which is difficult dish to ruin, and they were able to get it done right. Since the service took long time, we were not able to sample their desert.
Great Prix Fixe deal but act fast. I recently took my wife to Eulipia for her birthday and we were treated to exceptional food and a great value. They are currently (as of 6/1/02) running an anniversary prix fixe menu consisting of 4 courses for $25. The menu excludes a few items but still provides 3-4 options for each course. The meyer lemon artichoke appetizer was a favorite as was the flat iron steak. Save room for the molten chocolate cake dessert! It was intense. Make sure to ask for the anniversary menu upon arrival and when making the reservation.
