The Skinny
As the oldest gay bar in San Jose, Mac's boasts colorful history along with its, er, colorful clientele. After 42 years in business, Mac's made a recent (September 1999) move from its former S. First St. location to its present Post Street locale.
You Give Me "Fever"
Don't miss the Saturday night "Shameshack" event (9pm-1am) featuring DJ Andy Average spinning songs "like Mom used to play," if Mom were to play Eartha Kitt, Connie Francis, or Frank Sinatra. Cross your fingers and maybe Miss Alfred Steel will perform one of her rare (and tantalizing) bar-top dances.
Is She or Isn't She?
She's got the legs, she's got the swish, but is she a she or a he or a ... aw, who cares! Gays, lesbians, transvestites, drag queens, and even some wayward heteros come to party at Mac's. It has a little something for everyone. Well, maybe not everyone ...
When bad drinks happen to good locations. Mac's has a lot of potential for a friendly neighborhood gay bar. Unfortunately, the management has decided that their location and the actual product is enough to bring in customers. Mac's (as well as their sister bar Renegade's) uses a device that prohibits the bartender from pouring drinks freely. The machine cuts off after the designated amount of alcohol. This totally defeats the purpose of even having a bartender or tipping them. They might as well replace the bartender with a alcohol vending machine. TIP TO MANAGEMENT: Trust your employees and customers.
