Editorial Review for La Foret Restaurant – by Laura Reiley
The Scene
Tuxedoed waiters craftily attend to your needs, quietly skittering around the pretty dining rooms. Decor is fancy but comfortable, the perfect place to bring a new love or must-impress business colleagues.
The Food
Even though there are salads, pastas and fish dishes, don't let the menu fool you. Specials always include a game dish: caribou, elk, ostrich. Meat dishes often come swathed in intense demi-glace sauces, sparked by cognac, Madeira, port and the like. The meat-to-veggie ratio is somewhat disconcerting: an evening's dishes can arrive with a microscopic pattypan squash, two baby carrots and five snow peas artfully placed on the dish. The wine list boasts cabs and other brawny bottlings, as well as a number of gorgeous pinot noirs. For dessert, a bowl of strawberries hiding a pool of vanilla creme anglaise may be all you can manage comfortably.

My husband and I went here to celebrate his new job and the food, ambience, wine list, and service was excellent! Which of course means, a very expensive bill. But you get what you pay for at La Foret. We both had the same thing - the smaller tasting menu. After laughing at the single ravioli we both received, we both enjoyed it very much. Followed by single scallops, and then a seared ahi tuna, quail, and beef filet. All of which was serviced to us happily and with an explanation of the sauces and ingredients used. The wine list was excellent and the dessert was a mouth watering creme brulee in a small chocolate bowl with vanilla ice cream underneath. The location is up and out in to the Alameda hills a ways and the restaurants sits on top of the creek. Pretty scenery but not as good as Shadowbrook in Capitola. This was definitly a once a year adventure for us. We love our food and wine but would rather put our money toward a house than dinner and alcohol. A good selection for a romantic dinner, or celebration of some sort.
Pros: delicious food, interesting sauce pairings, wine list, service
Cons: price

I went to La Foret for prom and made reservations the week before. Upon arriving, we were promply seated with a fantastic view next to the window. (We even saw horses). The meal started with warm bread plus butter, and an appetizer (which changes from day to day) of saumon en croute to wake up the palate. The tasting menu I ordered was absolutely delicious; especially the tournedos de boeuf chanterelle and scallop on puff pastry. Although their specialty is game, their seafood is prepared quite well. The waiting staff is very attentive, serving every course at the perfect time and refilling our glasses before they were half empty. The mini souffle grand marnier is a MUST have, and should be ordered at the beginning of the meal because of its 30 minute prep time.
Pros: Cuisine, Ambience, Parking, Service
Cons: Price ($$$$$)
