Editorial Review for Taqueria Tlaquepague – by Christy Buena
In Short
Outside of the restaurant, a sign says, "Master of Mexican Munchies!" A line is usually formed before the restaurant opens for dinner and the food proves to be worth the wait. Burritos, margaritas and fajitas draw locals in where chile verde, carnitas and combination platters that come with rice and beans are served. As soon as guests are seated, a fresh basket of homemade chips and salsa is given out. Inside, Mexican decorations adorn the walls and create an authentic south of the border atmosphere.

Taqueria Tlaquepague has so much potential - good location, great food, etc. However this place is just dirty and the service is awful. I just can't understand why people flock to this place when there are other great Mexican restaurants in the San Jose area that try harder for their customers, such as Amigo Burrito on Stevens Creek. I wonder if the owners of Taqueria Tlaquepague have any pride in their business. This place has never been clean when I have been there and in need of a major makeover. While I love small funky restaurants, they have got to be clean. I can't say I will ever go back here. Very sad.
Pros: Good Food
Cons: Dirty, unfriedly service, very limited parking.

Food is good -- authentic and plentiful. You'll get baskets of fried chips and homemade spicy salsa at your table. The menu has a good variety of traditional Mexican fare. Their chicken dishes, in my opinion, are top notch. No weird dark chicken here -- lots of shredded white meat chicken in their taquitos, burritos, etc. The flautas are the best! However, I must say that their service is slow and you could wait a long time to be seated. Especially for dinner most nights and lunch on Sundays. Parking is pretty limited, too, so be prepared to find alternate parking on the street, etc. Plus, the strip mall they're in is pretty seedy, which doesn't really help matters. The other location on Willow is about the same on all fronts (parking, food, service), but the area is a little nicer. However, it's frequented by some pretty dicey characters and we've stopped going there, even though it's in Willow Glen. I don't need to look at the Virgin Mary tatooed on anyone's head while I eat lunch. Overall, maybe just better to get take out and avoid the restaurant experience altogether.
Pros: Good food. Good for take-out.
Cons: Slow service. Limited parking. Iffy atmosphere.
