La Concha Is Not What It Used To Be.
I remember when La Concha was always busy, had experienced technicians, and made you feel like a VIP. Those days are gone. I wanted to treat myself for a gift package and got I think it's called the Hide-Away where you get an hour massage, basic facial, and pedicure all for like $220. First off, that place is like the Winchester Mystery House with all the small hallways and twists and turns.
I got a massause name Connie, a lovely woman, with really strong hands. I kept telling her she was hurting me and she told me she needed to get my knots out and that was the only way to do it. I thought massages were supposed to be gentle and relaxing, I guess I was wrong. I'm otuhg but this was just too much kneading way too hard and she didn't listen to me even when I was practically crying saying it was hurting. I couldn't wait until my time was up with her. I mean who can't wait until a massage is over? certainly not me! Needless to say that night and next day my body was in extreme pain like I had been through 12 rounds with Mike Tyson in his prime.
Next is my pedicure. I'm taken into this small room where I am left for about a half hour sitting in the uncomfortable pedicure chair. This young girl walks in with her t-shirt and jeans looking like she just got off from school. I asked how old she was and she told me her mid twenties which was hard to believe. I asked if she had her license and she said yes but there were no certificates anywhere to be seen which i thought was mandatory. She was nice but not professional. She had some clippers, etc that were not washed so i had to ask her to wash them. They had a limited amount of colors so i chose just a basic red. This was going downhill fast. You would think for a $55 pedicure that you would get some kind of special with it, nope, I could have done that at home better. Oh wait, it gets better, she'll also be doing my facial.
She takes me into a small dark room and convinces me for another $10 or so that I need some deep cleansing facial. Why not just throw that into that package to begin with? All it basically is she said is higher end lotion for my face. She could have used the regular and I would never know so maybe I was suckered on that. She goes through all the basic facial stuff and when it comes to the extractions she used her fingers and kleenex - again something I'm sure I could have done at home with some steam and my own hands. It was over before I knew it!
Then it was time to pay. The girl who did my facial and pedicure is apparently the niece of the owner, Gloria. They were arguing about something and I guess times are tough there because there was no other staff there besides the Gloria, Connie, and the young lady and I was the only client...on a Saturday afternoon. Hmmmm. It took Gloria awhile to figure out the computer system to run my payment. Then she asked me for tips for the staff and I wasn't very happy with it but I felt like they were struggling so I gave them way more than I cared to - which wasn't much. The fact that she was asking me for specific tip amounts for her workers seemed unprofessional to me in the first place - like you're put on the spot and judged for what you pay. I have a feeling this place will be going out of business soon. They should be doing a lot more business, especially with a great location in downtown Willow Glen. I can only hope that if they read these reviews they will make some changes on how they do their business.
Totally UNDERimpressed, This is one of Silicon Valleys finest??? I hope not!.
Um...is this a completely different La Concha from the one reviewed on Yelp? La Concha gets trashed on Yelp and yet gets star reviews here...I dont' get it.
I went to La Concha a few years ago during the holidays. My first impression of the place was not bad at all, the reception area was 'guest ready'. It was pleasantly decorated and clean. The overall vibe was calming -- but that may have been because I went later in the evening and not a lot of people were there.
I got a facial, hoping for thorough extractions. The esthetician was a very pleasant young woman, but she extracted using her fingers and tissue paper -- which I have never experienced before. She had too light of a touch and hardly did any extractions. She actually gave up after a minute, telling me my comedones were 'too compacted' to extract. I have NEVER had this happen before, I don't think extractions are that difficult and in fact a big part of a facial for someone with problem/oily skin.
When the facial was over, I experienced a typical B-grade level receptionist service. Two women barely paid attention to me as they were busy speaking in a mixture of English and Spanish and counting out the till -- yep, counting out cash and tallying up the day's earnings, just like you see in a retail store at the mall or fast food restaurant. They were talking about how successful their week was while I was standing right in front of them. Very classy.
There are too many b-grade joints overcharging and under-servicing folks without me encouraging this practice.
This place is not the worst spa ever (I have other reviews for that) but it's certainly not deserving of being on any of my 'top ten' lists.
Best Staff. I personally love La Concha Spa...they make you feel welcome...i have gotten their facials twice before and i enjoyed both times...i found the music relaxing...there is a homey type feeling to it...everyone is so friendly...and i defentley recomend it to anyone who needs it
Must Have MASSAGE. Quality Treatment and Good Service are most important to me ....and that is what I Got from La Concha! I've been to an elegant Spa but had someone inexperienced, their service/quality was terrible and prices outrageous. At La Concha, it's very well worth it to me. I am going back for MORE! Better priced and the massage was the best I've ever had. I even brought my best friend.... I think they take pride in their efforts to satisfy the customer. I left happy and wanting to recommend this place to everyone.
Editorial Review. Full-service day spa specializes in body treatment packages designed for different skin tones as well as massages, manicures and facials.
Facial review. DO NOT GET A FACIAL AT LA CONCHA! The lady who did my facial seemed very inexperienced and unknowledgable about the spa-like experienec and facials. She massaged my face and I could feel her nails digging into my face! I had to ask her to stop. Also, they use 35% glycolic acid instead of the standard 30%. I couldn't sit through 2 minutes of the peel. And instead of neutralizing the acid, the facial lady just put an ice cold wash cloth over my face to "stop the action" as she kept saying. She was also loud and not graceful. The facial room had a curtain for privacy instead of a door so it definitely was not a serene, spa experience. In fact, it was the least spa-like experience I've ever had.
Not up to par!. I was looking forward to an relaxing day, and it seemed as if the staff was disorganized and unprepared. Unfortunately I will not try them again and when I asked if everything was alright I was shuffled around by an unfriendly assistant.
Quality is lacking compared to most.. The time I went I was planning on a mud bath, massage, and mini-facial. The mud bath merely looked like brown water and was in a large bright room that didn't exactly allow me to relax. I felt dirtier getting out. The massage was okay, but a little deeper than I would like for something that wasn't a deep tissue massage. After that, I had to wait a while before my facial. In front of the bench I was sitting on was a woman cutting someone's hair. Little did I know that his same person would do my facial. Once in the room, she would apply something and then leave for a few minutes. Then come back, remove, apply something and then leave again. After the third time, I thought it was defintely a mini-facial with mini-service. I was extremely disappointed in the end. Go elsewhere..
Nice, but not great. I scheduled a massage at La Concha because I heard it was a nice spa, plus it was much cheaper than other spas in the area. Afterward, I wish I would have spent more and gone to a more upscale spa. The massage therapist talked to me the entire time, most of which she was scolding me because I am ticklish! Also, I was not offered a shower afterward, so I had to drive home in my nice clothes with massage oil all over my skin. Otherwise, the spa was nice and the staff was friendly. It is a good place to go if your budget is somewhat limited. If you want the full spa pamering experience, I recommend you go elsewhere.
Great Massage but lacking in atmosphere. I was given a certificate to La Concha for a massage. The staff was friendly and the massage therapist was grea, but it is the atmosphere that was lacking. It is a renovated house. I was taken into a salmon colored room. I felt like I was getting a massage at someone's home. It was too bright for me to relax and there was only really quite music that I had to strain to hear. So although it was one of the better massages I have gotten over the years the atmosphere did not give me the relaxation that I needed to really relax and feel pampered.
