The grand dame of university art museums blends seasoned splendor with contemporary inventiveness..
The Scene
Closed after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the Stanford Art Museum reopened its doors in 1998 as the Cantor Center for the Visual Arts. The imposing, neo-classically designed edifice blends easily into its surroundings. This is a museum that delights in its diversity and puts it on display with intelligence and style.
The Collection
The permanent collection offers something for everyone: geographies from Oceania to Europe, Asia, North America, and Africa, and historical periods from pre-Christian to 1990s American (watch out for the cement worker). In addition to paintings and sculpture, there are ceramics, textiles and decorative arts (look for the Korean screen). Make sure to walk through the Rodin sculpture garden, open all hours.
