This place got it right a long time ago. Thankfully, they aren't about to tinker with 50 years of success..
The Food
Duh. Burgers. Think single burgers, double burgers, burgers with cheese, burgers with pineapple, burgers with pineapple and cheese. Kirk's calls the offerings "steakburgers" and true, they do resemble filet mignon more than McDonald's. In 1999, Kirk's added Western fries and scoop-shop ice cream to its list of offerings, changes that were treated with the fanfare and media attention of a total solar eclipse or a papal visit.
The Scene
Don't come looking for ambiance. Kirk's is a big cinderblock square obscured by a thick meaty fog (part abattoir, part forest fire). You order at the counter, take a seat at one of the blue vinyl booths, and wait for your number to be called. A small side patio with cafe umbrellas has significantly more charm, but you miss out on all of the Kirk's drama out there.
