Editorial Review for Radio Bar – by Jay Barmann
The Scene
This self-consciously hip but unpretentious bar is a cool place to grab a drink on a dark night in the ghost town of downtown Oakland. Glowing with the red walls and paper lanterns of a Chinatown brothel, it features DJs who blend an eclectic range of music--much like you would find scanning along a radio dial. With a high ceiling and an upper-level DJ booth, there's an airy feel to the place that's otherwise hard to find in a town filled with dive bars.
The Draw
Try one of Radio's kooky signature cocktails, Key Lime Pie (a mixture of Stoli Vanil, Malibu rum, lime juice, and 7UP). The crowd is mellow, but notably more fashion-conscious than at the nearby Ruby Room, the other primo Oaktown hangout.

Looking for a good drink and a chance to listen to the dj voted best in the east bay, with the best music coming on after 10:30. Went on my own and enjoyed a good night, even ordered a second drink ($3-4 gin and tonic that night) to listen to more of the music. A little smokey, but not too bad. Even the asian influenced interior wasn't too gaudy. Laid back groups mostly. Key lime drink is good as stated. More eye candy for the straight men than the women from the bartenders.
Pros: drinks, music, laid back atmosphere
Cons: smoke, small
