Tips for Yankee Pier

Terrible value. You should expect to pay more when you eat at Santana Row because you are helping the restaurants pay for their high leases for just being there. Yankee Pier is no exception. For dinner expect to pay over $20.00 just for a fish entree on a bed of mash potatoes with a side veggie. The food was only average and came as a small portion when you compare this place to other fish restaurants where you would pay 25-50% less. In addition, there was nothing there that made this fish restaurant "special". I walked out of there feeling that I was robbed. Go there for lunch when prices are generally lower or leave this as a last resort when you can't find seating at other restaurants.

Slow, slow, slow. Recently dined here on two occasions (once for lunch, once for dinner). Both times the service was painfully slow. If you are not in a hurry, its great, otherwise don't be in a hurry. Fish was fresh, but not worth the 11 bucks for two pieces and some fries.

Hog Island oysters get a Kennebunkport makeover.. The Scene
As the first eatery that opened in San Jose's Santana Row, Yankee Pier has settled in as the casual dinnertime playground for oyster-slurping Silicon Valley families. At lunchtime, the dining room is packed with shoppers laden with designer goods. Nautical touches, such as the lighthouse in the dining room, are a little heavy-handed, so the overall effect is Disney-does-New-England fish shack.

The Food
Embracing New England tradition, the kitchen elevates the humble clambake, with mixed results. A rich, creamy rendition of clam chowder and perfectly fried Ipswich clams are archetypes of the region's fare. Raw bivalves, such as Hog Island oysters slicked with shallot-laden mignonette, shimmer with freshness. Less successful are dishes where California influence is evident, such as sesame-crusted ahi tuna in a thin mushroom broth and steamed mussels struggling under the weight of smoky Portuguese sausage. Save room for dessert; velvety butterscotch pudding must be just like Grandma makes up in heaven.

Disappointing. We had a large dinner party at Yankee Pier and were hoping and expecting a problem-free meal. The initial drink orders and food ordering went as expected, then their service fell apart after that.

It took three discussions with various waiters/host before food showed up almost an hour after ordering. One order was wrong and an additional 10-15 minutes passed before we received that. Too much trouble for the price - not going there again.

Good food, yet need to get the service in line before qualifying as a place folks will want to return to.

Terrible service, mediocre food. I took my wife to the Santana Row Yankee Pier restaurant this weekend. After taking our orders, the waiter forgot to input it into the system, which we only realized after waiting for 45 minutes. As an apology, the waiter said that our lunch would be on the house.

But when he brought us the check, it was for the full amount. When I brought that to his attention, he was not too pleased and proposed to get us a free desert instead. All this time, the manager who was aware of the situation did not even bother to come and talk to us.

AVOID THIS PLACE, THE FOOD IS NOT EVEN WORTH IT.
