San Jose >Roux Louisiana Kitchen
Worst service ever for a bill of over $500.00.
Dining out is a multi-part experience – the ambiance of the restaurant, the taste and presentation of the food, and the quality of the service. Poor service can ruin the whole experience, and when food, drinks, and tip amount to more than $60 per person, that is not acceptable. Our experience was very disappointing, and I was embarrassed to have recommended the restaurant.
Roux automatically includes a very generous gratuity on the bill for larger parties, which at this restaurant apparently translates into no incentive to provide good, or even adequate, service to large parties, since a very good tip is assured regardless.
I don't know whether the problem was entirely our server, or whether the manager does not adequately staff the restaurant - service was much better early in the evening when there were still may empty tables.
In any case, drinks were slow to come, we had to ask repeatedly for various things during the course of the evening, we ordered 5 appetizers which were not brought to the table before our dinners arrived,we had to ask more than once for a dessert for our birthday, the birthday person's dessert was finally plopped down on the table with no fanfare, no candle, no song, and no forks. (We wiped off the used forks still lying on our table because by then it was just too much trouble to try to get any help.) We then had to wait way too long for our check - we finally had to ask the hostess to locate it for us. We were glad to leave - this experience put a damper on our whole evening out.
p.s. - I'm from the South and have been to New Orleans. A couple of tips for Roux:
Fried oysters should actually have identifiable oysters in them.
Grits are not 'served polenta style.'
Cornbread is not sweet.
believe the hype!. Great spot in Santana row...very fun, great energy..live music on the night we were there...and even when you're outside the restaurant you are in fun filled santana row. And unless you're a prissy, demanding patron who will find fault with the smallest mistake, you will have a good time.
Great food and Fun location. I spend a lot of time at Santana Row and had high expectations of Roux... and they delivered. I read the review below and was surprised because I had to opposite experience. I met the manager, Nico, and he was great. Maybe there is a reason the other one left? I would tell anyone to give this spot a try especially if you like outside dining.
Do NOT go there. I'm saving you the trouble, trust me!. I am a local event planner and have taken corporate clients to every single restaraunt in Santana Row and this by far is THE WORSE EVER! I don't even write reviews but I do read them and I hated Roux so much that I am actually taking the time to write this. From the very beginning I worked with the manager Hisham who just so happen to resign the next day and didn't pass on my info to the other mgr. When I called back a few days later to ask where my menus were, the guy had no idea who I was or what the hell I was talking about. So I had to explain everything AGAIN to the hostess because the mgr is just too busy to talk to me. A few more days go by and I still haven't heard back from the mgr who was supposed to send me the set menus. I called and had to explain myself again - literally and wait another week for the set menus. The hostess said to call back again if I didn't receive them!! I couldn't believe it but I waited and finally received them 2 days later from the mgr. I called 10 minutes after I received them to tell them my choices and the hostess said great, no prob. See you in two weeks. I thought that was it - NO! The mgr calls me at 2:30pm the day of my event and says, "Sorry but we don't have the food that you chose" I was so irritated but said whatever, I'll take what you have since my event starts in 4 hours and obviously there is nothing I can do about it! My group arrived and the 1 server (for 30 people!!!) still wasn't ready and the printed menu said "please pick 3 appetizers" after I already pre chose the 3 and said specifically NOT to print that! I also asked for beers to be pre set and that didnt happen. Their ended up being more people than anticipated and the manager on duty tells me that he's going to have to charge me more per person: I said, I don't think so! I even called an hour before to tell them and obviously the hostess who said "no problem!" didn't pass that info to the mgr. I ran out of space but this wasn't the end of my nightmare!!
Great FOOD!, Great SERVICE, Great Atmosphere!.
Well Unlike The review right below me... I had a Unforgettable experience. It was my Sisters Birthday And we had a party of 22 people. I was worried about trying this place but I was taken care of.. from my first phone call to reserve. The manager by the name of hesham (I hope I spelled it right, hehe) Took me step by step on different pre-set menus and even helped me pick out a comfortable table for my party. When We came the hostess and him, the manager, were there to assist me and my fellow freinds and family. It was alive and happening at the bar, with a live band and fun people! As soon as we sat down we were greeted by a very attentive waitor who responded to our need in a professional fun manner. The Corn bread was fresh out of the oven and the honey butter was a nice treat. When We got our apps and salads, they were prepared beautifully and tasted just as great! My Entree was the Jambalaya and it really was the best! I am From the South and that was how it was suppose to TASTE! The service was beyond EXCELLENT the server had all the answers to my questions and even the manager Heshom was very attentive to my comfort and my parties comfort. After the meal we went to the bar and danced the night away near the DJ!
Big Parties Beware.
I have a hard time believing this is Roux "first" review since there are over 100 on another site complaining about this restaurant.
I went there last night with 15 people. We had tried to call ahead to make reservations but were told we would have to eat off a set menu and it was a minimum of $25 a head whether they showed up or not. We chose to make the reservation right before and we avoided that scenario. We were all seated and we were introduced to our server Mr. Personality. He clearly was annoyed by our group the entire time. We aren't some young crowd whos rowdy. We are just a group out to celebrate a birthday in a respectable manor.
We get the menu and the ratio of food to alcoholic drinks is about 25% food 75% alcohol. What exactly did they plan on leaving off our "Set" menu. There are only 5 entrees, 3 or 4 salads, 5 appetizers and 6 sides. nothing looked all that great on the menu. We asked the server a few alergy related questions and he had to be coaxed to go ask instead of us excepting his "uh I don't know" answers.
The food was alright. nothing special, nothing terrible. just ok. It seamed like everything my fiance asked for, they were out of. He asked for a specific tawny port thats featured on the menu. they said they were out. he then brought one out and said, "good news we found a bottle in the back" Only one problem. Tawny ports are carmel colored. This was dark red. They were switching out a a cheaper drink and charged us for the more expensive one. Thats just wrong. There was a nice bus-lady who practicly grabbed our plates the moment our forks touched the dish, but it got very annoying after the 3rd time. Do they not have enough dishes for the entire restaurant?
Only bonus was the dessert.
The service SUCKED. Mr. Personality needs a different job or at least should act like he likes his current one. Just because the tip is automatically added, doesnt mean you get to give bad service.
