no longer the same restaurant. yes the restaurant was sold and was never the same again. Their menu changed and their portions did too. I no longer go to this restuarant. I gave it a chance after it chaned owners but they have failed.
Delightful Evening. I was looking for a special restaurant to celebrate my husband birthday. He loves French food. Gervais was a great choice! We started with escargot and foie gras. They wer both wonderful. The foei gras was parried with a sauterne that added to the delight. Then we had a large serving of lobster bisque. My main course was the roasted crab which was dungenees crab pick out and then returned to the shell and roasted. We toped the meal with a grand mariner souffle and espresso. The service was very attentive and the food great. I like that they had a full bar. We like to take our time and really enjoy a great meal and that is exactly what we did. The whole meal, including wine was under $200. We were very impressed and will go back often.
Valentines Day---broke my heart. This was to be a night of celebrating our engagement. An hour to be seated WITH A RESERVATION. They asked us to wait at another restaurant and use "their" bar. We waited 1/2 hour to have our order taken and 1/2 hour between courses. The staff was not organized to handle this event. Others were complaining about service and waiting for their food. Tables exchanged conversation of "lack of service". I think the entity that will pay for this is Gervais for those that may never return to find out what the rest of the meal was like because patrons started to walk out. There was no apology or compensation given for such a poor evening of service. I hope lessons will be learned from this event because this restaurant is not up to the standards of the set expectations. Truly a dissappointment.
Horrible Experience. Very short staffed. One lady was the bartender, the hostess and the waitress. It took us 1 hour to recieve our appetizers. The waitress did not know the menu...and blunted stated so. The lobster bisque was not creamy, very spicy and not sifted well. There were pieces of shell and sand. The scallops were over cooked and very rubbery. By the time it was served to us it was cold. I had dirty utencils. A silverfish crawled out of my lobster bisque. Needless to say, I asked for the check after that. Worst of all, no apologies were given. I was very dissapointed with my experience. The only up side was they had a decent Riseling.
Went downhill. I had been going to Gervais since they opened up on Park Avenue some 30 years ago. After they sold and moved to the lovely sight in Saratoga, I thought it was fantastic. They had the best french food in the valley and now they went to one of the best sites. I was really excited to go their on my anniversary, boy was I disappointed. I could hardly eat the food, the service was bad and when I complained, they told me the original owners sold the business so it wasn't the same anymore. They special evening was ruined and I will never go back.
Not great for the buck... My boyfriend took me to Gervais for Valentines Day - the experience was disappointing. When we first walked into the restaurant, no one greeted us, took about 5 minutes before the hostess noticed us...the waiter forgot my drink, my boyfriend asked for his steak to be cooked 'rare' , the waiter reiterated back "medium rare", my boyfriend said " no, rare", and the steak came out.."medium". The food was so so, the service was average to below average, not great for the buck..
fabulous dining. Restaurant Gervais offers one of the best dining in the bay area. If you are a real food lover and not just looking for hyped up cafeteria food, you will love this place. The Foie Gras appetizer is out of this world and changes seasonally. The rack of lamb is the best I have ever had with its divine sauce. The new beautiful bar gives one the opportunity to dine in a less formal setting within the restaurant where one can sample the lovely appetizers.
Rater.
Relaxed but refined atmosphere.
Friendly and knowledgeable service.
Excellent wine/dinner selections
Perfect. This restaurant is wonderful. There is a an excellent variety of items on the menu and the food is delightful. It has an imtimate atmosphere and is the next best thing to a trip to Paris. Food and service are perfect.
Fine, contemporary European cuisine inside a cozy Victorian house..
The Scene
The 154-year-old Victorian house reflects downtown Saratoga's affluent atmosphere. A freestanding gas fireplace stove in the front dining room is a reminder of the building's history. An outdoor patio and three indoor dining rooms decorated with simple, European country artwork provide plenty of seating. Fresh wildflowers in silver cups on crisp, white linens add elegance to each table. Attentive staff wear earpieces for constant communication with the kitchen.
The Food
A savory starter is the quail in puff pastry, with the unusual addition of a slice of black truffle ice cream. The heirloom tomato salad with creamy Buffalo mozzarella comes with a surprisingly refreshing tomato sorbet. Skip the somewhat dry sea bass and opt for the tender New Zealand rack of lamb. It's smothered in a wonderfully rich wine sauce and served alongside lightly breaded eggplant and potato slices. The chocolate fondant cake's crusty shell and warm fudge interior will satisfy most chocoholics.
