In a sea of burrito joints spread alongside an even more teeming ocean of southeast Asian eateries in Mountain View, Casa Lupe distinguishes itself in the little things. Paper placemats offer a primer on Hernando Cortez, Pancho Villa, and the Mexican flag; strings of little white lights make things festive; and the frozen margaritas are cold, kicky, and refreshing (they've just gotten their hard liquor license in order to do away with, shudder, "wine-a-ritas"). It's a comfortable spot from which to gaze out at the bustle of Castro Street while tucking into simple deep-fried taquitos or one of the combination plates of tacos, burritos and enchiladas. The most interesting dish is the entomatada, a nod to Italy that pairs a chicken enchilada with a fresh tomato sauce, a sprinkle of Parmesan and a dollop of sour cream. The house flan is worth an assay, but another margarita is a sweeter ending.Laura Reiley (6/99)

Whenever I'm meeting a friend for lunch who's coming from the South Bay, I usually end up meeting him/her at the book store on Castro and walking to a nearby restaurant (this way is one person is late, the other person can browse books while they wait). Anyway, Casa Lupe is a short walk from the bookstore and I love Mexican food so I've eaten there at least 3 or 4 times. Everything about the place - atmosphere, food quality, flavor, prices, etc. - is good. I can't think of a single thing to complain about. Even still, there isn't anything about this place that makes it exceptional in my book.
