Stripped of pretense and heavy on charm, this smallish bar and lounge built in 1949 thrives on loyal patrons and local talent. Weekly live entertainment ranges from comedy to poetry to jazz and Brazilian music. Stylish, comfortable vintage furnishings include chrome and vinyl "dinette" sets, high-backed, round booths and square, leather-topped wooden bar stools. A tiny stage, stand-up piano and several DJ stations complete the scene.

We're from out of town, and we were staying about 2 blocks further down Haight at the Red Vic. We stopped in merely to have a last drink before going to the hotel, and considered as just a bar the place was very satisfactory. The drinks, the atmosphere, the staff, and the other customers were all very pleasant and congenial. Then the band came on, and we had to stay to listen. It seemed like their first set was just OK, nothing fantastic. But they got better and better as the evening progressed. A highlight was when the trumpet player put a mute in his horn and started doing Miles. Awesome! Bar only accepts cash, but there are ATMs nearby. Public transport or taxi highly recommended. Great place to arrive early and snag a seat, then stay for the show.

I havent been to Deluxe in many years, but decided to swing by last Sunday. I am thrilled to report it was the same great bar it always was. Bartenders are friendly and personable, and the music was just plain great. If you havent been before definitely check it out, and if youve been away for too long, definitely go back now.
