I am a big fan of Janta for Indian food in downtown Palo Alto. They have been there forever and have consistently offered good quality, tasty treats from the sub-continent. I particularly like the papadan bread that they bring you while you're waiting for your food. Don't expect anything fancy, though: the place has a relaxed atmosphere with very casual service.

Janta provides a great week-day buffet. The selection is reliably tasty, familiar and not oily. They also serve warm and creamy chai. Because it's a buffet, service is minimal but the woman who brings the warm nan and the bill is nicely unobtrusive and efficient. Try it Monday-Friday for lunch. PROS: Great flavor, reasonable price, cute building CONS: Small space

Janta is one of my favorite Indian restaurants. The vegetarian dishes are delicious. The appetizers are great and the restaurant offers many types of bread.
