Creative Ice Cream Flavors.
As long as a shop uses quality ingredients, I think flavor selection is totally subjective and hard to rank. Rick's definitely has smooth ice creams and a good mix of basic flavors and some very interesting ones too, but I found that nothing FLOORED me, though my boyfriend LOVED the Industrial Chocolate.
Good basics (Chocolate, Coffee, Raspberry, Vanilla Bean) and more exotic (Kulfi, White chocolate w/ Ginger, Georgia Peach). All smooth and delicious, Rick's is definitely the choice as your local ice cream joint w/ some style but nothing worth driving great distances for so I am the search continues for my favorite killer chocolate and killer coffee flavor mixes, flavors worth driving out for.
Rick's Rather Rich in Palo Alto. Rick's Rather Rich is hands down the best in the bay area!!!!!...(and I'm not just saying that because I use to work there!!!).....I loved my job making Ice Creamand was taught by the master Rick himself......I did not work for the people that own it now, but they have not changed the quality one bit....try the pumpkin with a little chocolate...yum yum yum....keep up the good work!!!!
Excellent homemade ice creams and sorbets, including some most unusual combinations..
The Scene
Since 1956, this tiny shop in the Charleston Center has been scooping out rich, freshly made ice creams for fanatical fans. The tiny space looks like an old-fashioned soda shop with a sense of humor: Those happy cows in the mural have 3-D noses. There's a bench inside, but it can get crowded. On a nice day, you'll want to sit at one of the parking lot picnic tables and indulge.
The Food
Rick's makes its own ice creams using prime ingredients and lots of butterfat. It also offers a low-fat line of gourmet sorbets; try the smooth, tangy mango. Popular flavors include a strongly spiced pumpkin, Computer Chip (chocolate-orange ice cream with big chocolate chunks), a sophisticated White Chocolate Ginger and a delightfully aromatic Indian kulfi with essence of rose, saffron and cardamom. Pints and ice cream cakes can be ordered for takeout. If ordering in, try a sundae or float.
Hit and miss. Make sure to try the flavor first - a lot of these are not so great - the chocolate flavors are surprisingly NOT creamy and dull in flavor, but they do have exotic flavors like rose and kulfi - and the kulfi is really good - lots of chuncks of pistachios, really rich, and tons of saffron flavor.
How could they miss this one?!.
A silicon valley tradition.
VERY rich ice cream, but sooo worth it. Made in-shop.
Try the computer chip, in raspberry or orange. Ugh, I miss this.
Workers are funny. If you go in late, they often "double up" on the scoops (which is nice since they've become a bit pricey). Be sure to drop some change in the "401(k)" jar for the counter-people.
OUR LITTLE SECRET(?). I CAN'T HELP BUT TELL YOU ABOUT THIS LITTLE BIT OF ICE CREAM HEAVEN. THE ORIGINAL "RICK" HAS RETIRED, BUT HIS LEGACY HAS BEEN HANDED DOWN TO CAPABLE HANDS. THIS IS -BAR-NONE-THE BEST ICE CREAM THERE IS. THEY HAVE FLAVORS THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS EVEN TRIED.JUST GREAT. IT'S A SMALL SHOP AND YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT A BIT,BUT WORTH THE WAIT.
Cool Treat. Creamy, very flavorful, and rich.....make one appreciate speciality ice cream.
