Palo Alto Sol - solid Mexican food on California Ave. Palo Alto sol is not my favorite Mexican restaurant, but it does provide a decent selection of authentic Mexican dishes, a nice atmosphere, and it's right here on California avenue.

HORRIBLE!!!. When I saw the last review I had to write mine ....

If you want service - DONT BOTHER! Heres what happened - we arrived at the restaurant at 8.20pm, ordered our drinks and food and got them at 8.40 pm. We asked for more tortillas at 8.50pm, and were informed "the kitchen is closed - sorry!" (they close at 9pm) We called for the manager, who was no better, and rather than being apologetic, he commanded " you guys came in late". Wow!! Now, I havent been to any restaurant that does not come & chk for your last order before kitchen close. And its not like their food is out of this world, its just OK - then whats the attitude all about??!!

If could give them minus stars, I would !!!

Horrible Service - Avoid at All Costs!. There are so many great restaurants to go to on (or slightly off) California Ave, so dont waste your time here if you're looking for a pleasant dining experience. The food is fine - it's Mexican. The service is abominable. I have been to Palo Alto Sol numerous times and the waiters are always sub-par, but this last time, our waiter was downright insulting, not to mention incompetent. There are other Mexican places on California, if that's what you're craving. If you want a nice, sit-down dinner with lovely service, then go to Cafe Pro Bono, or Bistro Elan, or Joanie's Cafe... The list of good places goes on and on, as far as I'm concerned. This place doesn't deserve to be in business, while many others next door or accross the street are ready and willing to provide you with fantastic food and service.

You Must Have the Enchiladas!. This place makes amazing sauces. Friends who've tried things without the sauces aren't wild about this place, but I can't tear myself away from the enchiladas long enough to try those other things. It also has a great atomsphere, and really good prices for the quality of the food.

My favorite Restaurant. This place is great. It is my favorite restaurant in Palo Alto. The service is wonderful and the food is delicious. The mole is great as well as the Guallijo sauce. The owners also own Vive Sol in Mountain View which is great. The siblings of the owner own the Fiesta del Mar restaurants in Mountain View. They all have similar food which is amazing. Ambiance here is nice, mellow, dimly lit with colorful walls/decor.

The BEST!. Do NOT pass this place up! This is one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants around, none of that Tex-Mex crap. All the recipes have been in the owners' families for generations and each sauce offers a unique and totally awesome flavor. Try the Guajillo and/or Mole sauces, you'll be hooked. Killer margaritas to boot and at least 50 different tequilas to choose from. The casual atmosphere is softened and refined by votive candles at each table, and the service is always top notch. Excellent all-around experience.
