Best lunch under $5 you'll find anywhere in the area!!!!

by jcfrench

Yes the service is incredibly rude, save the Hispanic busser who was very attentive and friendly. Yes the place is a bit dumpy and plays annoying high itched INdian music. Yes the buffet looks kind of gross. BUT, for 4.25 you can get a huge fresh Masala Dosa with a side of sambar and be full for the rest of the day. It is far and away the best lunch bargain in the area. I would skip everything else on the menu, we ordered a chili chicken app that was not at all good, tasted like soggy boneless buffalo wings.

Four stars for the delicious and dirt cheap dosa. (1 star for the buffet and rest of the menu)

  • Pros: DOSA!!!!!
  • Cons: pretty much everything else

No frills or thrills here, just good northern and southern Indian cuisine.

No frills or thrills here, just good northern and southern Indian cuisine.

The Food
Dishes from the south are more unusual than those from further north. Delicate Madras "dosas" are crepes made of everything from lentil to moong bean flour. "Utappam" is a crisp, manhole-sized, American-style pancake flavored with onions, chilies, cilantro, and cumin and served with rich coconut, spicy mint, and tart tomato sauces. A more acquired taste, "idli" are steamed rice cakes also served with the trio of sauces, but even a rookie can appreciate the sambar, South India's classic rice-lentil-tomato soup. Northern tandoori dishes are also worth sampling and are sometimes on offer in the $8 lunch buffet.

The Scene
Both Swagats specializes in both traditional northern and southern Indian cuisine, with chefs from northern and southern states in residence to ensure authenticity. You'll feel comfortable at either location; service is attentive and decor is clean and simple.
