Consistently good Vietnamese food, although pricier
by treble
Vung Tau (we prefer the Milpitas location) has been our favorite Vietnamese restaurant since the mid 90's. Their dishes have gotten pricier since they've renovated their other San Jose location which is why we don't go as often. However, if you have the budget to spring for the highest priced tamarind shrimp which is in the mid-20 dollar range, you will definitely impress. The ambiance is basic functional cafeteria, and the service is lackluster, but the food is always consistently good.

Healthy Vietnamese cuisine blends Chinese, French and Thai influences; dishes include soups, salads, vermicelli, pork, fish, beef and more.
The best Vietnamese food in the Bay Area
by honeyvelour
I've been to many upscale Vietnamese restaurants in the Bay Area--Le Cheval, Slanted Door, Le Coloniel, Tamarine, Three Seasons--but Vung Tau tops them all. First, their menu is a great value and you can easily feed four for well under $100. I also love them because the food is spot-on authentic vietnamese. You won't see any fancy fusion dishes on the menu, just plain and simple, traditional Vietnamese food that's fresh and jumping with flavor. My favorites are the Canh Chua and Bo Luc Lac, which in my opinion are the best around. The only place with equally good Bo Luc Lac is Le Cheval.
One thing I need to point out is that the parking really isn't as bad as the other reviews mentioned. I've never had a problem finding parking even during the busiest times--maybe because I used to live in SF and am good at finding parking.
- Pros: Authenticity, Service, Value
great seafood
by anhseidler
I always come here for the great seafood. I have never been disappointed. Try the crab with the tamarind. It's out of this world.
- Pros: great food, easy parking
- Cons: none
My favorite Vietnamese restaurant
by lalamonkey
I have been going here since I was about 9 and I still like this place. The rice plates are the best. I also recommend the noodles with grilled meat. This restaurant has the best eggrolls too. Since they renovated, I like going here even more!
- Pros: food, looks nice
- Cons: location, parking
good food but expensive
by denios
I liked the food there but I didn't find any waiters friendly. And price is expensive.
- Pros: good food
- Cons: expensive, unfriendly waiters
best vietnamese restaurant in san jose
by chocotiffy
I've been to countless Vietnamese restaurants and I have to say that this one is the best. They recently renovated the exterior/interior of the restaurant and now the dining experience is better than ever. They have a different type of eggroll, which most Vietnamese restaurants don't serve. I like the noodle soups, noodle salads, rice plates, and pretty much most of the food there.
- Pros: prices are OK
- Cons: limited parking
