Ellegant and delicous
by n_wilker
Yummy!!!!
We ate here on Saturday night! We had no problem getting a seat at around 8pm! I?m guessing the price point keeps the crowds down. The food was great, service was a little slow, but I think that is to be expected. This is a place where they expect you to make an evening of your meal.
We started with the smoked salmon. Very interesting presentation and of course super delicous!
Our eating partner started with a spicy peach cocktail, we went with out favorite vinyard ? Le?cole 41, but this time tried the cab. It was lovely! We enjoyed it quite a bit!
For our main meals we went with scallops for me and ruby red trout for hubby. Both were excellent!
For desert we tried the chocolate almond cake. Mmmmmm! Very very delicious!
All in all it was a very enjoyable dinner with very tasty food. We would recommend this place for a special event or a date night!
- Pros: Wonderful food, ellegant, good wine list
- Cons: Long dinner, expensive but tasty
great steak
by reviewum
I thought the food here was outstanding. the first time we came, we were treated as if we were lower than the waitor's life. we were very upset about that but the second time we went service was much better...oysters were good and the steak is delicious.. next time we will save room for dessert.
tasteless food
by ailin4190
Over priced and tasteless. I went here 3 years ago and it was good but ever since that one time, I've been there about 10 more times and they were all terrible. Food is nowhere near its value. Service is good but food is horrible. I don't know how they can still survive.
- Cons: food, overpriced, food
Artfully prepared New American cuisine, prime cuts of beef and dreamy desserts served in a sparkling downtown setting.

In Short
Gracefully refurbished, this 100-year-old spot is as lovely as the beautiful Silicon Valley types who call ahead to make reservations. The restaurant is romantic and upbeat, marrying the Victorian-style decor of the hardwood lobby with modern touches such as hand-blown glass chandeliers. This is where local chefs come to learn how to do New American cuisine right. The signature beet salad, steaks and sumptuous desserts are favorites on a menu that changes often.
- Pros: good martinis
Great Chop house
by tsteele
This downtown hot spot has evolved into the very best steak house in the south bay. The ambience is far above average, the service is top drawer, and the food is always top drawer. This fine resturant is probably downgraded by being catagorized as a steakhouse, but it is no doubt the best in San Jose.
- Pros: Food, Wine list, Service
- Cons: Parking

South Bay Favorite, But Not Mine
by pinkflower
Everyone loves Stump's. It's consistently rated one of the best in the South Bay, however, I wasn't that impressed on the many occassions I've dined there.
Service is good, but needs a little refining. However, our server was very knowledgeable and recommended a great bottle of wine to pair with our food.
Ambiance is elegant, but a bit casual. In my opinion, it is not a great place for a romantic dinner unless you request a private table. The dining room can get noisy, and you might be seated within close range of other diners in those side-by-side tables.
Food is good, but not great. The steak left me unimpressed.
South Bay Gem

My husband and I have been to Stumps for several special occasions. Most recently, we celebrated my husbands birthday and had an INCREDIBLE meal from appetizer to dessert. The food was amazing by itself, but we had them pair wines with each course and are glad we did. That took everything to another level completely. What an experience! The staff is always pleasant and attentive and the atmosphere rich, warm and cozy. We highly recommend this restaurant.
- Pros: Food, wine, staff, ambience, parking
The Best Spot for a Special Night Out
by gccolema
This is by far, my favorite restaurant in the whole South Bay. The only thing that is better than the supurb quality of service, is the food they bring you. If you are unsure what to order, just asked their proffesionally trained staff. They can help you with everything from appetizer selection to your wine selection and make it the perfect fit every time. No matter how often I go, the staff never ceases to amaze me with their professionalism and their amazing ability to make my fiance and I feel like we are the most important guests in the restaraunt. I highly recommend AP Stump's to anyone who wants to be wined and dined for a very special and memorable evening.
- Pros: Fantastic Food, Amazing Servicing, Romantic Ambiance
All show, no substance
by sous_chef
The dishes we tried looked nice, but they were not good. The Ahi Tuna was cold (as in fridge cold) in the middle, and could hardly be cut with a knife, not to mention chewed. The scallops didn't taste fresh. The only reasonably good dish was the cake we had for dessert. We were very surprised to be served such a bad meal for so much money, and we were very disappointed. We would rate this restaurant four Zantacs instead of four stars!
- Pros: Good ambience, Reasonable service, Good dessert
- Cons: Disappointing food
