Overpriced, over-rated...
by wmole at Citysearch
Burgers are good, but for $6.50 from a fast food joint?? If you get fries and a shake, you've just plunked down $12. NOT worth it.
The fries really are nasty. WELL below standard. The shakes are good, but there are so many places that are better.
By the way, the burger meat does have a bit of a barbecue sauce flavor, so stay away if that might bug you.
Best Burger in Mountain View
by mute001 at Citysearch
The burger tastes absolutely amazing. I live in San Francisco and have easy access to top of the line burgers, THIS place rivals even the best of the city!
- Pros: Amazing burgers, original to novel creations
- Cons: may need to find street parking
it's ok, nothing special

i'm a big hamburger fan, i eat burgers at least 3 or 4 times a week. this place is ok, definitely a solid burger but nothing to rave about. fries are so so and the place itself is a little shabby. ok to go once in a while if you feel like having a "charcoal grilled" burger, but don't expect anything mind blowing.
- Pros: it's charcoal grilled
- Cons: charcoal grilled should taste better than this....
Great burgers, avoid the chili, expect trouble parking
by soopahman at Citysearch
Let's make this simple:
Burgers: 10
Fries: 6
Milkshakes: 6
Chili: 1
Parking: 3
Bottom-line, go for the burgers and skip the rest. Consider dropping someone off to pick up your order and taking it home since the parking is very limited. The burgers really are charcoal grilled and taste freaking amazing. The South of the Border burger is actually spicy - most salsas in this area end up being boring and bland. Strongly recommend.
The chili is awful. Avoid it in all situations at all costs.
- Pros: Burgers
- Cons: Chili
I double-dare you to find a better hamburger ANYWHERE!

We are new to the area and stopped in to Clarke's out of curiosity. What a find!!! Hamburgers grilled on a charcoal grill! Better than my backyard hamburgers and those are fantastic. Cooked to perfection. Mushrooms are killer and many cheeses and toppings to choose from.
I brought a burger home to hubby and he loved the fries so much, it took him a while to get to the burger. When he did, he was amazed.
Took my son there while he's visiting from out of town. His words were "Awesome" and "Oh, my God".
- Pros: Best hamburger I've ever tasted. Fries are fresh and shakes are real ice cream!
- Cons: More expensive that fast-food, but who cares?
Unbelievably good!

I do not have a doubt in my mind that this is the best burger joint in Mountain View! I had to write a review because those people reviewing Clarke's Charcoal Broiler and giving it a below average or average score obviously haven't tried their double burger with cheese. This place is awesome, can not even compare it to a burger at McDonalds or Burger King, it?s like it's a whole different burger. Trust me I come here every weekend to get the double burger with cheese and it doesn't disappoint. The only down side is the parking. So do yourself a favor and try this place out, you won't regret it.
- Pros: Hamburger is the best you'll ever taste
- Cons: Parking and not enough seating
My Review
by dianehelenenadeau at Citysearch
The hamburgers are delicious. They have speciality burgers in which you can build your own burger and I love it! The enviroment is average, but suits the type of food offered. Service depends on who is being hired at the time, and like any other restaurant, can be bad or good.
- Pros: build your burger, moderately priced
- Cons: crowded at times, parking...not enough
I miss this place
by slhslh at Citysearch
I used to live walking distance from this place and I miss it. They offer one of the best burgers ever, great fries, chocolate shakes, good prices, great service, and more. Actually, just writing this review makes me want to have one of their burgers! I used to order the cheeseburger with mushrooms, fries, and a shake or even the vegie burger was hard to beat. Whenever I'm in the Bay Area I try to make it back to get my fix!
- Pros: Great Burgers, Inexpensive, Good parking
49er burger
by bigvinny at Citysearch
Much like the 49ers football team, this burger was disappointing and overpriced. For almost $8, this burger was small, and not loaded with mushrooms as stated. The taste was ok, but didn't quite live up to the hype. Should be renamed the John York Burger.
- Pros: tasty fries, huge menu, very clean
I wasn't impressed
by retroom at Citysearch
I was expecting more.....the hamburger patty didn't have enough texture......it just didn't make it.
- Pros: good fries
- Cons: expensive
Experience the charcoal difference of this plane-jane buger joint.

The Scene
It's strictly counter service, pretty bare bones, but with a light and airy aesthetic that defies most burger-house logic. Clearly Clarke's makes no gender distinctions with carnivores--all locations have a cleanliness level and ladies rooms that any meat-eating woman could get behind.
The Food
The basic 1/3-pound burger is a good place for the rookie to begin, although 20 or so specialty burgers gussy things up nicely (note the 49er with its avalanche of sauteed mushrooms, American cheese and sourdough bun). Burgers are juicy, fat and cooked medium. Clarke's aficionados will tell you that the charcoal, employed to turn steer into manna from heaven, is scientifically designed to maximize your burger pleasure. Grilled dogs, ribs and chicken don't garner the same enthusiasm, and the baked potato toppings should be expanded.
