Good bar, very poor food
by greyyrider
While the service was fine, the food preparation was very poor and not served as described in the menu. The fresh fish was ridiculously over cooked to the point where we could not eat it. When sent back, it was returned uncooked (raw in the center). The carnitas was not served as described on the menu either and was also overcooked and too salty. The marguaritas were excellent so would suggest going for the drinks and chips but not for dinner.
- Pros: margaritas and chips
- Cons: entrees

Good Mexican
by tall1sobay
This place is pretty good with occasional splashes of "very-goodness": The chips are very good, I really like the salsa (although it's very non-traditional) and they have very good carnitas. The service, while friendly, is usually very slow (they seem to be perpetually understaffed).
The atmosphere is decent. They have an indoor seating area and a nice covered patio for outdoor seating. It's an OK place for kids if they can take the slow service. Parking is not a problem.
Not so great.

Went to this place with my family and was impressed with the menu selection, but we weren't impressed with the food when it came. The salsa for the chips was very weak and tasted like tomato sauce. The Carnitas was over fried and not very tender. The "best damn enchiladas" were just average. The Vege enchilada was a rip off because it didn't really have any vegetables. The sangria had ice in it and tasted like watered down wine with juice. The Huevos Ricardos and the Chili Verde were the only halfway decent things we tried there. This place only deserves a citysearch rating of 6.
Great Patio a Fun Place
by jgordonpo
The patio is a wonderful place to sip on a drink with your chips and Salsa. Menu has many items to select from, I have never been disappointed with the quality of food and is served hot. Recommend reservations as this is a popular place to hang especially with the college crowd. Service most times as been near perfect, staff seems to be covering too many tables on busy nights at times. Parking can be tight on busy nights. Food portions are very generous in size. Eating inside can get a bit noisey.
- Pros: The Patio, Food Portions, The Drinks
- Cons: , Parking at Times, Loud Inside
Point to one bad time you've had at this spot. Can't do it, can you?

The Food
Nominated for best Mexican restaurant and margarita bar for its frothy mixes and appealing dishes. Among the menu's cross-continental hybrids (Thai quesadilla?) you'll find tacos, burritos, salads and tostadas that will all do you well. Beers include Pacifico, Bohemia and Tecate (you can get 'em "buy-the-bucket," scoring seven beers for the price of six), but margaritas are a best-bet.
The Scene
Part of a small West Coast chain, the Palo Alto location has been around nearly 15 years, fine-tuning its long menu. Compadres' patio is one of the best places on the Peninsula--all year long. Heat lamps make this friendly adobe area a great place for beers and chips even in the cool months. Clearly the appeal of the place has something to do with drinking margaritas on the patio on a nice day, or the Stanford hotties unwinding at the end of a grueling school week.
